Recommended writing, publishing, and creativity resources

More books and websites than anyone can keep track of offer a wealth of advice and inspiration for writers. I’ll keep this list simple and personal. Here are three resources that speak to me now, that I’ve used in my writing and creativity coaching.

A Writer’s Space by Eric Maisel. A wonderfully creative book that will expand your awareness of both the physical and psychic space that writers work in. Maisel is considered “America’s foremost creativity coach.” I’ve taken classes from him and have the utmost respect for his work.

Thinking About Memoir by Abigail Thomas. This little book of intimate revelations and inventive exercises is full of “thinking” that will get you writing.

Publishize by Susan C. Daffron. A practical manual on how to self-publish as well as promote your nonfiction book, by someone who’s done it nine times.

This list could go on. I’ll add more later.…

Fault Zone, a literary anthology

Fault Zone is published by Sand Hill Review Press to showcase selected work by San Francisco Peninsula Writers Club authors. The popular 2010 debut issue quickly evolved into an annual publication, complete with reading tours. Fault Zone is one example of what a writing group with a vision and a dedicated editorial team can accomplish. Fault Zone: Transform, the sixth volume in the series, was published in early 2016.

The entrepreneurial spirit in this club has also built a strong presence on the Literary Arts stage at the annual San Mateo County Fair in June. Literary Arts events include poetry, plays, music, Fault Zone readings, book launches, workshops, and more. Many indie authors are among those who display their books at Author Day (on the final Saturday of the Fair). In 2016 the stage comes alive again June 11 through 18, with more of the same. The theme is “writers helping writers.” We’d love to see you there.

If you’re not in the San Francisco Bay area, check out local writing groups where you live, or start your own if none exist. The rewards include information, inspiration, friendship, support, readers, and more.
